We detox through food, a liquid diet, intermittent fasting, and many other methods to release toxin residue from food and alcohol to feel strong, energetic, and alert. But did you know that you can help your body detox with Pilates? Yes, you can; but before I explain how it works, make sure you understand the exhalation we covered last week. You will need it.

Let’s first start with the lungs. “When you exhale, ‘Squeeze’ every atom of impure air from your lungs in much the same manner you would wring every drop of water from a wet cloth.” I love this vivid and self-explanatory quote from Joe Pilates.

Lungs are further aided by the blood circulation carrying fresh oxygen to the rest of the body to speed up all the healing in our bodies. So it follows that we should have efficient blood circulation as well. How do we do that? Pilates movement, more explicitly rolling and unrolling action.

How do you then make your body become a detox machine? By enabling the above two systems – efficient breathing and circulation – to work uniformly to produce the best results.

  • Use your abdominal muscles to help push the breath out of your lungs.
  • Practice your rolling like a ball.
  • Don’t tuck your hips when you exhale.
  • Don’t move slow or too fast when you do Pilates; finding the right tempo will come with practice.
  • Always, always, always synchronize your movement with your breath.

If your body needs cleansing, try today’s Pilates sequence. Once you’ve had a chance to practice  today’s video, leave a comment and share your experience
